Translate Latin - Latin Translation Assistant

translate latin

Provides users with definitions of Translate Latin, but grammatical analysis of every word is performed. The dictionary covers the vocabulary of most Classical texts, as well as some Later (Medieval) Latin entries. It can be useful for both for a student of Ancient Rome, a Latin translator or a habitual reader of Church Latin texts and the Vulgate.

This GUI for Whitaker’s LATIN WORDS makes it easier to carry out many important tasks: looking up Translate Latin and English words, printing entries and saving your current session in a text file. A “meanings only” mode allows using the program primarily as a dictionary. By default, morphological properties are given for every word you type in. With some luck and a semester of Latin you just might be able have a few Latin phrases translated or to figure out the basic meaning of some Latin quotes you come accross. If you are a student taking a Latin class for the first time you might appreciate a way to parse some difficult forms. Just don’t get too carried away with this! Also, to clarify things, there is no existing application capable of Translate Latin. There are several programs that are intended to make this possible, but the ambiguities of Latin grammar, difficult syntax and lexical uncertainties have not been overcome just yet. It is still best to employ a professional Latin translator. They are Quintus’ Latin Translations or Classical Turns also there is  a comprehensive downloadable Lewis & Short’s Latin-English dictionary with color-coded definitions and quotations.

Latin Translation Assistant Installation Instructions

1. If you do not have WORDS installed on your computer, get it at http://users.erols.com/whitaker/words.htm and install the program. WORDS is a free program that contains a Latin dictionary database and a very rudimentary DOS-style interface.

2. Download the free Latin Assistant program here as a zip-file. The size of this download is quite small and it should only take a few seconds.

3. Copy the program file into the folder where WORDS had been installed.

4. Run the executable file.

5. Enter a Latin word in the field at the top and press Enter or click on Analyze. You can even translate an entire Latin phrase or a sentence – all the words in it will be analyzed separately. The definition(s) along with grammatical data will appear in the window on the right. On the left a list of Latin words that you have looked up will be displayed. Words can be deleted from this running list. You can also edit the definitions or remove unwanted forms and meanings. After you click on Remember the edited text will be retained for the duration of the session. The great advantage of this approach is in the user’s ability to quickly refer to translations of the words that were found in the current text. If your knowledge of Latin is at best imperfect you may have noticed that when you translate a sentence you end up trying various translations for some words, making sure that they work well together. Not to mention that you can simply forget the definition of a word that you have just looked up! Most Windows XP users should have no problem running the application. If any problems arise, remember that this is a free program of Translate Latin distributed as is and that you can still use WORDS itself.

7. If you are running Windows95, it is likely that following installation, on starting the program, you will get a message that the program cannot run without MSVBVM50.dll. This Translate Latin file can be downloaded free of charge from www.dll-files.com.
Following downloading, unzip this file and extract it into the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. Should your specific Windows95 installation require any further files, you will then be informed. It has been noted that Windows Vista may only allow you to copy MSVBVM50.dll into the folder where Latin Assistant resides. If so, go ahead and copy the DLL there.

8. Similarly, a basic installation of WindowsME delivered a message that the file COMDLG32.ocx was not available to the program, and this therefore prevented the run. This file can be freely downloaded from:

http://www.ascentive.com/support/…COMDLG32.OCX,

The file must be installed directly into your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. As it is to be used solely by Latin Assistant, it is not necessary to enter the file into your Windows Registries.

9. Any other files required by your specific installation can be found quite readily by inserting the full name of that file into a Google Search, and then sorting through the returns for a useful link to a downloadable copy. In the majority of cases the downloaded file, after unzipping – if necessary, will need to be placed into the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.

Latin was the lingua franca of the ancient world for about a thousand years
