Latin translator google? Google translator is wonderful but language barrier of Latin is inexplicable.   Will there be a google Latin, after all it was the universal language of Western civilization for millenia?

The problem with an automated Latin translator is that unlike most modern languages (for the most part) Latin phrases to English phrases don’t have a one-one correspondance. Latin words have numerous meanings. Also Latin word order doesn’t follow any strict set of rules. Words in a sentence can be placed in multiple places and the sentence will still mean the same thing. For example, the phrase “Julia silvam ambulat” is translated by a computer to mean “Julia in wood to ambulat.” Obviously, that translation doesn’t make any sense as “ambulat” isn’t even an English word. By the way the sentence means “Julia walks in the woods.”

Google should have a Latin translator.  It does not seem like the project should be that difficult.  Latin’s “complicated” rules seem like they would only make it more perfect for computer translation because of their exact prescriptions.  It is never impossible to program anything.  The human brain is essentially running programs when it translates Latin.  Google might just be taking a different approach to a Latin translator than to those of other languages because of the perfection that can theoretically be achieved with a language that has no active development and a great deal of academic following.  There could also be some trouble with the different appearances of Latin, which is now treated holistically despite existing and developing for as long as it did.
